Day 56: Peterborough to Stamford

A delightful day! It seemed like a mid-summer day. The sun shone and the birds sang.... lovely. We set off from Peterborough along the River Nene following the Hereward Way, which was badged as the Nene Way in this section. The swans were out in abundance.

The river was calm and placid,

and the swans were in family mode, working together to enhance the nest.

Reflection only enhanced the view two-fold.

The gates along the way were innovative in the extreme with this interesting counterweight saving the trouble of ensuring the gate had closed.

We passed a ruin of an old mill,

and a badger sett and both added interest as we walked along.

Leaving the river we continued through the countryside,

and past a wall with an old letter box which was dated back to the reign of Queen Victoria.

The trail became less flat as we seemed to be leaving the Fens and into sheep country where there was an abundance of baby lambs.

Then into more agricultural land as we passed through a large organic farm and on across newly planted fields where the trail followed an old Roman Road (Ermine Street) which is now a farmers field but still marked out as a right of way.

Despite the Hereward Way being re-routed and thus adding a few kilometres to our day's walk we made it to the lovely town of Stamford which is in the county of Lincolnshire... Our 14th county!
