Day 78 Caldbeck to Blackford

After the granduer of Lakeland this day was a bit of an anticlimax. We set off along the last leg of the Cumbrian Way to Carlisle along side the River Caldew

and, looking back towards the Lake District we could see the summit of High Peak where we had climbed yesterday.

But looking forward we headed north toward Scotland, passing flowers,

pleasant riverside meadows with cattle,

and sheep,

and more sheep.

Then we climbed up into a lovely shady woodland, still following the Cumbria Way

as it then followed a bicycle path into Carlisle. Then began a rather tedious walk through the city and out the other side, leaving the Cunbrian Way as it completed in Carlisle. We had then mapped a way following small right-of-way paths to the Dandy Dinmont Campsite (yes, that is what it's called). However, it all turned out to be not that easy as many of the pathways had a sign marking the beginning but disappeared into a maze of hedges and barbed wire fences which necessitated much retracing of steps and very tired feet, not to mention frayed tempers. But we arrived eventually and set up out tent, did our washing and fell gratefully to sleep!
